Topics Discussed in this Episode:

  • How Lisa became involved in the world of Food Allergies
  • Airline Travel, Allergies and how FARE is supporting making airline travel safer for those with allergies
  • The FASTER Act – The Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education & Research (FASTER) Act, H.R. 2117, S. 3451
  • The Covid Pandemic & Food Labelling
  • Feeding babies new foods including the major allergens early and often & BabiesFirst.org
  • OIT & TIP – Oral Immunotherapy and Tolerance Induction Programs and the disparity and barriers for access to these programs
  • FARE’s Patient Registry – Why U.S. citizens are encouraged to register and share their journey with allergies!
  • The “Contains Courage” campaign and “Living Teal” – both programs which focus on living life with allergies (my tagline!)
  • The future of research on biomarkers and precision medicine for food allergies
  • Upcoming retreats – Research Retreat and Living Teal Summit – register at foodallergy.org – these will both be virtual events!

Key Takeaways:

  1. Leanne Mandelbaum of No Nut Traveler educated FARE about the issue of safety for airline travel for those with allergies. Lisa reached out to her networks and shares that they were starting to make great progress to help solve this problem together – support from Capitol Hill – really trying to tackle these issues for safety and ensuring that epinephrine auto injectors are available on planes. The bottom line is that FARE is committed to continuing with the progress they’ve made so far in this area!
  2. The Faster act – The Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education & Research (FASTER) Act, H.R. 2117, S. 3451 – looking to move forward with congress and the FDA to include sesame as the 9th priority food allergen
  3. Food Labelling – Lisa’s personal passion project! Research is shining a spotlight on the fact that people are avoiding foods that they could eat because they don’t understand the labels – bringing this research to light shows the need to standardize labels and to get industry to commit to market education – conversations to date are very positive and Lisa is clearly a passionate proponent of this cause and is using her industry knowledge to make headway in her advocacy efforts for our community to have safer and comprehensive food labelling practices.
  4. Introducing babies to new foods including common allergens – Check out BabiesFirst.org – a huge initiative (multi-million dollar initiative) to promote the message that it’s important to feed babies allergenic proteins early and often -they learned that only 30% of paediatricians have this conversation with parents about this. FARE has an advocacy program to encourage the application of the research in this area to practice. She also highlights the importance of supporting underserved communities’ access to these food protein (targeting US government programs to serve the underserved community).
  5. OIT – Oral Immunotherapy & programs such as TIP (Tolerance Induction Program) and the limits to accessibility of these programs – Lisa recognizes that there is disparity in who can access these programs and that it is currently limited to those with wealth and means – with these programs proliferating and growing numbers seeking these treatments, FARE recognized the need for and therefore held a summit on OIT – she talks about disparities with underserved populations and insurance coverage and access to paediatricians – the conversations have been really strong but now they are seemingly coming to a consensus that this needs to be investigated and more information and research on how this can be accessed and done so safely is needed.
  6. The Patient Registry – Lisa Gable encourages U.S. patients to share their journeys on the patient registry here. No one understands food allergies better than those living with them every day. Your unique experience can help researchers broaden FARE’s understanding and answer questions that will lead to important breakthroughs.
  7. The “Contains Courage” campaign – looking at how teens, young adults and adults live with food allergies – The Contains: Courage Campaign is a transformative five-year fundraising and awareness Campaign supporting families living with food allergies, and educating all communities about the disease. With your support, we will drive awareness, ensure that communities have the tools they need to spread the word about food allergies and raise a historic amount of funding for research, therapies and diagnostics to improve the quality of life of children and adults who are affected. Lisa shares their new campaign “Living Teal” and the initiatives that FARE is taking on surrounding living daily life with these allergies. Lisa mentions how our young adults are going to be marrying and having children and how concerns are starting to arise with questions about our young people growing up with these allergies and whether they will be passed on to their children!
  8. Lisa shares the positive news about partnerships and people coming together in the medical community to solve the problems of food allergies.
