2. Food allergies are on the rise and are more prevalent than ever, especially amongst children! Here are some important facts about Food Allergy:

  • Food Allergies can be life threatening – an anaphylactic reaction can occur when someone has an IGE allergy to a food
  • Symptoms of food allergies include hives, redness, flushing and itchiness of the skin; gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, cramps); respiratory difficulties (choking, difficulty breathing, swelling of the airways, tightness in the chest), dramatic drop in blood pressure and symptoms of fainting, dizziness or light-headedness; uterine cramps; headaches, feelings of doom or that something “isn’t right”; metallic taste in the mouth.
  • If you suspect you or a loved one may have a food allergy get tested and a diagnosis ASAP so that you can a) AVOID the foods you are allergic to and b) Get a prescription for an epinephrine auto-injector such as an Epi-pen so that you are prepared in case of emergency.
