Recipes often call for buttermilk. Fear not Dairy-free friends! You can easily make your own dairy-free buttermilk at home! I use this for my Dairy-Free Lemon “Buttercream” Birthday Cake recipe amongst others.
- Dairy-free milk of your choice (I use rice or coconut)
- Lemon juice
- Add one tbsp of fresh lemon juice for every cup of non-dairy milk. Allow mixture to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes. You now have dairy-free buttermilk! Use according to recipe directions. For example, if your recipe calls for 1 cup of buttermilk you will now use this minus 1 tbsp as you have made 1 cup plus 1 tbsp of buttermilk.
